Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay Passes Away at 65

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has died at the age of 65, the team has announced.

Irsay, who made infrequent public appearances throughout the previous NFL season, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday afternoon.

A post from Irsay's X account sent out a good luck message. Indiana Cavalry earlier in the day. The message stated: 'Move forward PACERS. Best wishes for Herb, everyone at the @Pacers organization, and our city!' NBA playoff game with the New York Knicks .

During a 2023 discussion with HBO Sports Irsay acknowledged that he had undergone rehabilitation for alcoholism and painkiller addiction at least 15 times but hasn’t touched alcohol since 2002.

In late 2023, he was discovered unconscious at his residence due to a presumed drug overdose.

NFL fans also showed concern for him when he came into view beneath Lucas Oil Stadium being led around without moving on his own back in January.

The Colts' statement said: "It is with profound grief that we inform you of the passing of our cherished Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, who slipped away quietly during his slumber today."

Jim’s devotion and enthusiasm for the Indianapolis Colts, along with his kindness, community involvement, and above all, his deep affection for his family stood out remarkably. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his daughters—Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson—as well as to his whole family during this time of sorrow.

Some of Jim’s most cherished recollections stemmed from his early days at training camps in Baltimore, where he developed close bonds with players, coaches, and staff members who felt like an extended family to him.

'He worked in every department before he was named the youngest general manager in team history in 1984 when the Colts arrived in Indianapolis. After he took sole ownership in 1997, he led the Colts to a long series of division titles and brought the city its first Super Bowl Championship. Jim's love and appreciation for the NFL in addition to Its history, tradition, and principles influenced him to become a steward of the game throughout his 50-plus years in the League.

'Jim's generosity can be felt all over Indianapolis, the state of Indiana and the country. He made philanthropy a daily endeavor. He never hesitated to help countless organizations and individuals live better lives. Music was one of Jim's passions and the ability to share his band and collection with millions of people across the world brought him tremendous joy.

In short, his aim was to improve the world, and this belief remained constant. Jim’s passing has left his loved ones, the Colts organization, and supporters around the globe with deep sorrow, yet they find inspiration in his compassionate and distinctive essence.

In 2014, Irsay got arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, a situation he currently attributes to being singled out due to his status as "a wealthy, white billionaire."

Irsay maintained that his recent hip operation was the reason for failing the field sobriety test, rather than drinking alcohol.
