What happened?

Two employees of the Israeli embassy, a young couple soon to get engaged, were fatally shot by a single assailant in Washington D.C., around 9 pm on Wednesday. Authorities stated that an individual shouting pro-Palestinian statements has been taken into custody.

The two were shot as they left an event at the Capital Jewish Museum, which is in downtown Washington about 1.3 miles from the White House.

It is reported that before the shooting occurred, the suspect was observed walking back and forth near the museum.

CCTV evidence showed that after shooting the first two victims in their backs, the assailant continued firing repeatedly. Even as one of the women attempted to escape by crawling, additional shots were fired.

According to the FBI, the suspect reached the U.S. capital merely a day prior to the incident occurring for a professional event.

Witnesses recounted the scene after the assault. "Around 9:07 pm, we heard gunshots, and then a man entered looking extremely agitated," Katie Kalisher stated. They believed at first that he merely required assistance and somewhere secure to stay.

Yoni Kalin, who was present at the event, commented: "People were soothing him, offering him water, looking after him. We had no idea he was someone who carried out executions without mercy."

He was the one who fired the shots. When the police first arrived, he said, 'I'm the one responsible. I don't have a weapon.'

He takes out a red kaffiyeh [a scarf representing solidarity with Palestine] and says, 'This is for Gaza. Freedom for Palestine. There's just one answer,' Intifada Revolution," and he continued shouting, "Free Palestine.

Who were the victims?

The Israeli foreign ministry identified the victims as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, stating that they were both local employees.

The German-Israeli Society mentioned that Lischinsky was raised in Bavaria and communicated fluently in German.

"We recall him as an individual who was open-minded, intelligent, and profoundly dedicated, whose passion for fostering German-Israeli relationships and finding pathways to peaceful coexistence in the Middle East illuminated the world around him," stated Volker Beck, the society’s president.

Tech2Peace, an organization advocating for peace by educating young Palestinians and Israelis and fostering dialogues among them, noted that Milgrim was an engaged volunteer known for "uniting individuals with compassion and intent."

The statement read: "Her commitment to forging a brighter tomorrow shone through all her actions. Her presence and essence will be deeply mourned."

The Israeli embassy mentioned that their team was "deeply saddened and shocked by their killing. It’s impossible to convey the intensity of our sorrow and disbelief over this tragic loss. Our thoughts go out to their families, and the embassy remains committed to supporting them through these difficult days."

Israeli Ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter stated that the young pair was on the verge of getting engaged. "This week, the young man bought a ring planning to propose to his girlfriend at some point next week in Jerusalem," he informed reporters during a press briefing.

They made a stunning pair.

A rabbi from Washington who encountered the pair mentioned, "They were pleasant, well-liked individuals." Levi Shemtov shared this with BBC Radio 4. Today The programme noted that he spotted the couple at Jewish gatherings around town, and mentioned that the murders were "disturbing information."

US Attorney General Pam Bondi informed journalists on Thursday: "I witnessed a young man's corpse being removed; he was just about to get engaged. His whole future lay ahead, yet it was cruelly snatched away."

She stated that the shooter would face "the fullest possible legal consequences."

Who is the suspect?

The only person of interest identified was Rodriguez from Chicago. According to Police Chief Pamela Smith, upon being apprehended by the venue’s security staff, the individual shouted repeatedly, "Free Palestine, free Palestine." They had entered the museum before being detained.

"When placed under arrest, the suspect revealed where he had disposed of the weapon, which was subsequently retrieved. He also suggested that he was responsible for committing the crime," she stated, noting that this individual had never interacted with law enforcement before.

Rodriguez informed the officers present, "I did this for Palestine, I did this for Gaza," as stated in the charging papers.

During his initial court appearance on Thursday, the accused chose not to request a detention hearing and instead had a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 18th.

Rodriguez remained largely silent throughout the proceedings, only responding with "I do" when a federal magistrate judge asked if he comprehended his rights.

According to Bondi, the suspect acted solo.

It’s thought that the suspect uploaded a long article on social media approximately one hour following the shooting, indicating it may have been pre-scheduled.

The cruelties perpetrated by the Israelis towards Palestinians are beyond description and impossible to quantify," states the post cited by Sky News. The message continues: "Public sentiment has turned against this genocidal apartheid regime, yet the US administration remains indifferent; well, let them manage without public support since they will prosecute wherever possible, placating dissent with insipid assurances of their efforts to curb Israeli actions when direct suppression of protests isn’t feasible.

Rodriguez’s post ends saying, “I love you Mom, Dad, baby sis, the rest of my familia”.

How have world leaders reacted?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday morning that he was "deeply outraged by the appalling anti-Semitic killing".

Later, he asserted that Sir Keir Starmer, alongside the leaders of Canada and France, stood "on the wrong side of history" following their statements earlier in the week that "concrete measures" would be implemented if Israel proceeds with its "heinous" escalation of military activities in Gaza.

A video shared on social media in English featured Israel’s prime minister stating: "Yaron and Sarah were not casualties of an arbitrary act. The terrorist who brutally shot them dead had only one motive — they aimed to murder Jews. As he was being apprehended, he shouted, 'Free Palestine!'"

I can never comprehend why the leaders of France, Britain, Canada, and others fail to grasp this basic fact," Netanyahu said. "They are currently suggesting the creation of a Palestinian state and offering these killers what they see as the ultimate reward.

You're standing against the tide of human progress and against the flow of historical advancement," he went on, expressing gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for his "clear stance supporting Israel.

Starmer previously stated: "I strongly denounce the antisemitic assault that occurred outside the Israeli embassy in Washington DC."

Antisemitism is a malevolence we must eradicate whenever it surfaces. My thoughts are with their coworkers, families, and dear ones, and as ever, I stand alongside the Jewish community in unity.

Trump , posted on his social media platform Truth Social, stated: "These terrible Washington D.C. murders, clearly driven by anti-Semitism, have to stop immediately!"

Hatred and extremism have no room in the USA. My thoughts go out to the victim's families. It’s heartbreaking that these events occur. May God be with each and every one of you!

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy wrote in a post on X: “Horrified by the killing of two Israeli Embassy staff in DC. We condemn this appalling, antisemitic crime. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and colleagues at this awful time.”

Were there any comparable assaults before this one?

The leader of the American Jewish Committee, Ted Deutch, informed CNN that the global Jewish community feels threatened. Certain Israelis mentioned that the shooting incident made them fearful about traveling internationally.

Advocates for rights have observed an increase in both antisemitism and anti-Arab sentiment in the United States.

Occurrences have encompassed a failed scheme to strike at a New York Jewish center, an act of arson targeting Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s home, along with assaults on Florida enterprises seen as supportive of Israel.

Events associated with anti-Palestinian bias have encompassed the tragic killing of a six-year-old Palestinian-American child in Illinois through stabbing, an attempt to drown a three-year-old Palestinian-American girl in Texas, an attack perpetrated by a group supporting Israel in New York City where they shouted "Death to Arabs," and a brutal assault on pro-Palestinian demonstrators in California carried out by a hostile crowd.
